The Group 5 version of the 320 was introduced in December of 1976, ready to hit the track the following season. It was to be raced by BMW's loyal customers on both sides of the Atlantic while the German manufacturer also fielded works cars for their talented 'junior' drivers.

The new BMW 320 was given the famous Warsteiner design, which was to be seen on Obermoser/GS vehicles since the 1975 season. However, Obermoser was unable to follow up on his previous successes in the new Group 5 vehicle. His best single result in the DRM 1977 was fifth place at the Int. Westfalen Cup Race (Zolder, Belgium).

The 4th Generation Group 5 E21 320 Turbo pictured here was campaigned by Team McLaren in the IMSA Camel GT series and piloted by the fabled David Hobbs.
