The Queen's Poisoner is devoid of the graphic violence, sex and language that so easily turn me away from many other fantasy books. But while doing so, it doesn't compromise in the storytelling that I enjoy. I would give it a PG rating as a movie since it does feature death, some intense situations, threats made, thematic undertones, etc..

It's a new world, a new magic system, and the characters-I've just fallen in love with them. In this series, the main protagonist starts as a young boy in book 1 then becomes a teenager in book 2 and an adult in book 3. I've never skipped so much history between books before, never written such a young hero before, but it really works.

The story was pretty nice too, with espionage, cunning plans, and the Queen's Poisoner (not someone who poisoned a queen, by the way) is a mastermind. But the characters are what really made this story great. The author had a way of taking hatable characters and building them up to be loveable in a subtle, natural way. The Mortimer girl was.

Knight's Ransom takes place several years before the Kingfountain series and takes us through the Argentine family's reign. After reading the book I realized I am missing.

The world was interesting and unique, with its unusual water-obsessed religion and the subtle magic that's just barely outside of "natural", making it much more believable than most fantasies. The story was pretty nice too, with espionage, cunning plans, and the Queen's Poisoner (not someone who poisoned a queen, by the way) is a mastermind.
